New Year, New Skin Care Routine

When the New Year rolls around, many of us start evaluating our lives and setting new goals to help us continue moving in the right direction. Among the many resolutions there are to consider, why not take the time to revamp your skin care routine? With the goal of healthier skin in mind, below is a simple yet highly effective skin care routine that will keep your skin looking radiant, supple and youthful.

1. Cleanse

The best step to take right off the bat is to wash your face with a cleanser that can remove dirt, oil, makeup, and other random debris. There are dozens of different types of cleansers on the market, from pump soaps and bars to creams and foamy washes, so you can basically take your pick. Just be sure to take your particular skin type into consideration (e.g., oily, dry, sensitive, acne-prone, etc.), so that you can pick a cleanser that will be a good fit. One cleanser that has consistently received rave reviews (including being voted Readers Choice Winner by Allure Magazine) is Philosophy’s Purity Made Simple, which is a highly effective combination of a cleanser and moisturizer. You can pick it up at Macy’s here at Tri-County Mall.

2. Apply a Serum

Applying a serum enables you to deliver a high concentration of powerful skin-revitalizing ingredients directly into the skin. This can help diminish wrinkles, mask blemishes, and smooth out your complexion overall. It’s important to choose a serum that is rich in nutrients, so that your skin can be nourished and rejuvenated. One of the most effective and well-formulated serums on the market is Wexler’s MMPi Skin Regenerating Serum (available at Bath & Body Works), which boosts the skin’s own regenerative powers at the structural level, and measurably reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Another highly popular serum is bareMinerals’ Skinlongevity Vital Power Infusion (available at Macy’s), which nourishes your skin with essential minerals in order to promote a radiant and youthful look.

3. Moisturize

The cold, dry air of winter can really zap the moisture out of your skin, so you will need to make moisturizing an indispensable element of your beauty routine. Whether you have oily skin or dry, flaky skin, practically all skin types can benefit from regularly applying a high-quality moisturizer. One of the best moisturizers on the market is Clinique’s Superdefense Daily Defense (available at Macy’s), which provides powerful antioxidants to keep your skin hydrated and protected from the harsh elements. Not only is this moisturizer allergy tested and 100% fragrance-free, but it also provides broad-spectrum SPF 20 protection, which will guard your skin from harmful UVA/UVB rays. You should apply this moisturizer on your face and neck in the morning, but only after completing the first two steps, of course.

4. Hydrate

This is perhaps the most neglected “X factor” behind maintaining healthy skin during the winter time. You have to keep your skin hydrated from the inside out, and the only way you can really do this is by drinking plenty of water on a daily basis. Experts recommend drinking at least 64 ounces of water a day (or eight 8-ounce glasses), but if that seems a little too steep, you can try drinking about 5 glasses along with eating plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables that have a high water content (e.g., grapes, apples, strawberries, spinach, cucumbers, cauliflower, etc.).

Most beauty experts will tell you that establishing a solid skin care routine is one of the most important elements of your beauty regimen. Just consistently apply the simple steps outlined above to maintain beautiful, healthy skin throughout the New Year!
